Ushguli – The Crown Jewel of Svaneti
Nestled in the heart of the Caucasus Mountains, Ushguli is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe (2,200m). This UNESCO World Heritage site is a place where time has stood still.
The Roof of Europe: Situated at 2,200 meters above sea level, Ushguli is recognized as one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe.
UNESCO World Heritage Site: The village of Chazhashi is preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage site. It serves as an open-air museum where more than 200 medieval towers, stone houses, and cobblestone paths remain unchanged.
The Iconic Svan Towers: Built between the 9th and 12th centuries, these stone towers served as family fortresses protecting residents from avalanches, invaders, and blood feuds.
Key Highlights to Explore:
1. Mount Shkhara and its Glacier: Shkhara (5,193m) is the highest peak in Georgia. The hike from Ushguli to the base of the Shkhara glacier along the roaring Enguri River is an unforgettable alpine experience.
2. Lamaria Church: Perched on a hill overlooking the valley, this 12th-century church dedicated to the Virgin Mary features ancient, mystical frescoes and is surrounded by low stone walls.
3. Queen Tamar’s Towers: Legends say that Georgia’s iconic medieval ruler, Queen Tamar, used Ushguli as her summer residence. The ruins of her castles still stand guard over the valley.
